NPower: Rethinking Nutrient Management in Europe

In the contemporary context of nutrient management, Europe is seeking bold, coordinated responses. The core of the NPower project lies in a shared mission: to transform how Nitrogen and Phosphorus are managed across its five key emitting sectors, from agriculture to industry. Behind this ambition, the people involved—researchers, practitioners, public authorities—are bringing knowledge, vision and deep commitment. We spoke to four of them during the project’s Kick-Off . Here’s what they had to say:

Miguel Ángel Suárez

R+D at CETENMA | NPower Project Coordinator

“Nitrogen and phosphorus are vital elements for life and agriculture, but mismanagement can lead to serious environmental damage. That’s why we need to track how these nutrients flow—only then can we intervene and restore balance.”

Miguel highlights the importance of developing cutting-edge recovery technologies to turn waste into value:

“We are applying circular economy principles by transforming excess nutrients in wastewater and livestock residues into fertilisers. If we can prove they work—technically, environmentally, and economically—we’ll be paving the way for real change.”

He adds a local reminder:

“We are applying circular economy principles by transforming excess nutrients in wastewater and livestock residues into fertilisers. If we can prove they work—technically, environmentally, and economically—we’ll be paving the way for real change.”

“Look at the Mar Menor. It shows what happens when nutrient cycles are not under control—and why stakeholder collaboration is essential.”

Shurpali Narasinha

Senior Scientist at Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke)

“Agriculture used to be framed as a problem. But it can also be part of the solution.”

Shurpali underlines the value of working at the regional scale:

“Each region—Spain, Ireland, Finland, Belgium—has different nutrient challenges. By identifying the best management practices locally, and then sharing them, we can help close the nutrient loops across Europe.”

José Sandoval Moreno

Director General of Water, Regional Government of Murcia

“Good governance isn’t just about writing rules. It’s about creating rules that are trusted—transparent, efficient, and realistic.”

For Sandoval, Murcia’s advanced agricultural system is a reference point:

“In our region, farmers have spent over 20 years integrating cutting-edge technology. This experience in adapting and applying the best techniques can—and should—be replicated in other regions.”

Erik Meers

Professor at Ghent University

“If we map where nutrients are lost and where they can be recovered—throughout the food and farming chain—we can act at every step.”

Erik’s vision is a fully integrated nutrient system:

“By quantifying nutrient budgets and identifying the potential of sidestreams, we make the system more sustainable—not just environmentally, but also economically and socially.”
